Works Of Mercy Chaplet

Chaplets serve to foster bridges for personal connection.  Bought at Benedictine Abbaye Sainte-Marie de la Pierre-qui-Vire over twenty years ago simply with the intent to pass it on, a friend gave this to me this spring.  I did not know what to do with it until I spent this week quietly in the woods.  Being there amidst that community of trees and animals analogically reminded me of my relationship with humans in need.  Returning home I modified this to seven beads with each bead corresponding to one of the corporate Works of Mercy…a beautiful melding of the Catholic Worker and Benedictine elements of my life, and my connection to the natural world…

  1. Feed the hungry
  2. Give drink to the thirsty
  3. Clothe the naked
  4. Harbour the harbourless
  5. Visit the sick
  6. Ransom the captive
  7. Bury the dead

…these are the only things I really care about doing…there’s nothing I so much care about praying for.
